Peter Lillystone, Pastor of Waterloo Road Church :
This week I was invited to play Golf at a society day at Wexham Park Golf Course. Being a keen golfer, I was only too pleased to accept the invitation. The weather was great and the course was in excellent condition. I had never played on this particular course and so I needed a guiding hand to help me find my way around the course. Many of the holes had dangers hidden from view; bunkers, ditches and various water hazards.
I was glad that my friend was playing with me and he was willing to point me in the right direction. He did such a good job in guiding me around the course that I actually won the competition! The next time I play the course, I trust that I will be able to return the favour.
No one knows what is round the corner. Often there are hidden dangers which come upon us suddenly. Quite often our reaction to these problems is "If only I’d known about that, I would have done something about it!"
The other evening we thought we would explore Black Park. Somehow we lost our way and we ended up at Burnham Beeches instead. Of course, if we had taken the map with us in the car, perhaps we might have been able to find our way to Black Park.
Perhaps we should have stopped to ask someone the way. The voice of experience can be a real help to us as people share with us from their own experiences.
One day Jesus was speaking to his disciples about heaven and He said an amazing thing: " You know the way to the place I am going". John 14:4
The disciples were amazed. They told Jesus that they had no idea where he was going and therefore they couldn’t possibly know the way. Jesus gave the following answer :
"I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me". John 14:6
Just as I needed my friend to guide me around the Golf Course, we all need someone who can show us the way to heaven. It’s interesting that Jesus didn’t say that the way to heaven was through human effort (good works or church attendance). He made it very clear that the only way to heaven is through a person, himself, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Just as I needed a map for our trip to Black Park, we need a map to guide us through life. I would recommend God’s Word, The Bible, as a trustworthy guide to life.
If you would like to read part of the Bible to see what it has to say, why not contact us to obtain a free copy of John’s Gospel.
